“Each celestial body, in fact each and every atom, produces a particular sound on account of its movement, its rhythm or vibration. All these sounds and vibrations form a universal harmony in which each element, while having it’s own function and character, contributes to the whole.”
Pythagoras (569-475 BC)
The ancient teachings of the world’s religions, belief systems and myths postulate that the initial component of the Universe was one pure form of sound. Jewish mystics, Tibetan monks, Christian contemplatives, Sufi dervishes, Native American shamans, and Hindu sages, all describe vibration as the very stuff of creation. In the shattering or big bang of this unified tone, the universe came into being, and each of its components - the elements, space, animate and inanimate objects, all vibrate within a prescribed frequency range.
The pioneers of sonic healing understood that the disparate entities resulting from the big bang are constantly seeking to reunite with that original sound, and this underlying principle - that of the tendency toward harmony in nature - is the basic tenet of Sound Yoga.
“If we accept that sound is vibration and we know that vibration touches every part of our physical being, then we understand that sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell in our bodies.”
Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, The Healing Power of Sound
In the landmark study quoted above, oncologist Mitchell Gaynor describes the transformation of his approach to practicing medicine after discovering the healing properties of the Himalayan singing bowls. Dr. Gaynor’s work, and that of many contemporary sound healers, describe many inspiring stories of reversing disease, and overall improved quality of life.
There are many ways we can employ sound to bring the body into balance, but it is the use of pure sound from the Himalayan singing bowls, and crystal bowls, that I choose to use in combination with Restorative posture and Pranayama breathing techniques.
